About DAVO

The German Middle East Studies Association for Contemporary Research and Documentation (DAVO) was established in 1993. Since then about 850 scholars and other people interested in the Middle East have become members of DAVO. They are not only from Germany, but also from other European countries, North America and the Middle East.

Aims of DAVO

DAVO is a scholarly, nonpolitical and nonprofit-making professional association open to all persons interested in the Middle East. The main aim of DAVO is to improve the exchange of information on Middle East studies between its members and various national and international institutions. This aim is pursued by

  • Publishing the DAVO-Nachrichten, a journal  of German and international Middle East studies, including a roster of members, recent and future meetings, publications, research projects, internet news, reviews and presentations of institutions engaged in Middle East studies (two issues per year, each up to 150 pages, more than half of the text is in English and French),
  • operating this DAVO-Website, containing conference announcements, information on research centres and other institutions, recent articles in journals, announcements of grants and other information relevant to Middle East studies,
  • issueing the DAVO-Info-Service, which forwards announcements of congresses, job vacancies, grants and other urgent news dealing with Middle East Studies immediately to the members of DAVO by e-mail.
  • operating a DAVO-Diskussionsforum, a discussion network for members of DAVO via e-mail. Its primary goal is to foster communication among the members of DAVO in order to advance the study on the Middle East by improving the exchange of all kinds of information on contemporary research in that region.
  • organizing annual conferences on Middle East studies. The 14th International Congress of DAVO will be held in Freiburg/Breisgau on 24 - 28 September 2007.

Middle East studies include disciplines relevant to the study of an area comprising all Arab states and territories, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Turkey, the Muslim states of the former USSR and Israel, as well as the impact of this region on the development of other parts of the world.
