Researching Yemen
Yemen News tries to give readers a
broad, balanced, and objective coverage of one of the least
reported countries on earth. Toward that end, we consult a wide
variety of web sources and, on a daily basis, email our findings
free to subscribers.
One of the best sites we have found
is that run by the American Institute for Yemeni Studies
www.aiys.org
This is a mastersite which contains links to some 200 other
websites devoted to Yemen. Looked at from the standpoint of news
gathering, the AIYS site has some useful contributions to make,
though of varying quality.
Go to the site and click on its
link to Yemen Webdate. That will take you to several other choices,
including Yemen News (no relation to us!). Click that and you will
find an array of news sources to look at. Here is where you will
find the variations in quality.
AIYS sends you to a preset search
engine with a very long address:
www.newsindex.com/cgi-bin/process.cgi?query=Yemen&mode=any
We have examined a lot of news search engines and this is not one
of the better ones. We suggest you go instead to
or to even to
both of which provide a much better selection of news items. And,
when we seek out very specialized information, we regularly go to
- a new and extremely versatile search engine.
AIYS also directs you to
- a useful site which we often consult, largely because of its
Arab sourcing and because of its sense of insider reporting.
Another site AIYS points to is
This site gets a mixed review: while it appears to be
comprehensive, balanced, and objective, it actually is fairly
selective, follows the Yemeni government line, and avoids anything
tending toward criticism.
The AIYS site also links to a
number of leading Yemen newspapers, whether government controlled,
opposition controlled or independent. Of the independents,
Al-Ayyam is by far the best. Among the English-language newspapers,
AIYS offers three: The Yemen Observer (opposition-run) at
Yemen Observer (government-run)
and The Yemen Times (independent)
Finding up-to-date news on Yemen is
for us a daily job. Filtering through the thousands of web pages
devoted to Yemen is time-consuming and not always rewarding. But,
when looking for good background material on almost any subject to
do with Yemen, we find the AIYS site a good place both to start
and to end up. In our book, it gets a five-star rating.

Research Guide: Lebanon
While Lebanon is well represented
on the Internet, the best single resource for researchers is the
Al-Mashriq server
This is hosted by the Informatics Department at Ostfold College,
Norway, and administered by Professor Borre Ludvigsen, formerly a
resident of Lebanon for 20 years.
It earns bouquets for the site's
size, breadth and design. Al-Mashriq is truly a mega-site. With
well over 15,000 multimedia documents, it is the largest
repository of cultural information about Lebanon on the Internet.
Its sections encompass subjects from archaeology and architecture
to weather and World-Wide Web resources. Of particular interest
are the vast photographic archives and map collections, both
historical and contemporary. Its spartan design also avoids the
flowery graphics that increase downloading times.
Al-Mashriq links researchers to
useful academic centers and research institutes. For these, click
on 'Lebanon' on the main page, then 'WWW Resources' and follow the
'Websites in Lebanon' link http: //almashriq.hiof.no/lebanon/000/005/leb-domain.
html. This yields a good supply of Lebanese educational,
organizational, and governmental websites.
Two particularly useful sites are
the Digital Documentation Centre
ddc, co-hosted by Al-Mashriq and the American University of Beirut
and the Lebanese Centre for Policy Studies
or
an independent research institute based in Beirut. The latter,
founded in 1989 and run by Paul Salem and Michael Young,
researches and hosts conferences on the political, social, and
economic development of Lebanon. It publishes the Lebanon Report,
Abaad, and the Beirut Review periodicals, selected articles from
which are archived on the website. These publications provide
reliable economic data - a difficult thing to come by on Lebanon -
alongside political analysis.
For those requiring up-to-date news
information, follow Al-Mashriq's "Media" link and you will find
the Lebanese Arabic press - for example, al-Anwar
an-Nahar
and as-Safir
These all require a .pdf file reader, such as Acrobat. However,
clicking on the Daily Star link
yields the free Internet version of Lebanon's principal
English-language newspaper. Launched in October 1997 and updated
daily by administrator Ali Mneimneh, this website hosts the full
text of articles, features, opinions, cartoons, and discussions.
On the negative side, Al-Mashriq
purports to cover the entire Levant though almost all the site is
devoted to Lebanon. In terms of search engines, Al-Mashriq does
not link researchers to Edmond Ibrahimian's Lebhost, the first
search engine exclusively dedicated to websites containing
information pertaining to Lebanon. It is also well worth a visit
Its "Media" page also omits the Israeli daily Ha'aretz
or
a useful source for research regarding Israeli perspectives on
Lebanon. Furthermore, the "Media" page does not include the
valuable Institute for Documentation and Research on Lebanon (IDREL)
website
whose free Shufimafi report provides a neat synopsis of the week's
events in Lebanon. 'Shufimafi' is superior to the newswire
provided by its American-made cousin, Lebanon.com
Aside from a section on Hizballah
and some articles and images on Israel's 'Grapes of Wrath'
operation
Al-Mashriq's coverage of the conflict in southern Lebanon is a bit
thin. Best results require both Lebanese and Israeli perspectives.
For the former, the Lebanese 'Resistance' has a well-maintained
official homepage
that includes a daily chronicle of events from the appearance of
an Israeli reconnaissance drone to heavy artillery bombardments,
statistics detailing the results of military operations, and an
alphabetical listing of Hizballah's dead. This website ought to be
visited in conjunction with the glitzy website of Hizballah's
Central Press Office
and the personal homepages of Hizballah's Secretary-General,
Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah
and spiritual guide, Sayyid Muhammad Hussein Fadlallah
For an Israeli perspective, visit
the Israeli Defence Force website
which gives a more detailed perspective than the Israeli Ministry
of Foreign Affairs site
consisting mostly of reference documents and speeches under the "Peace
Process" link. The IDF website offers a chronology of events on
Israeli's northern border and in southern Lebanon, violations of
the "Grapes of Wrath" understandings, and data regarding IDF
casualties. Also worth visiting is the website of the Four Mothers
Movement
il/FourMothers, a rich source of articles of which many are
sympathetic toward Lebanese perspectives.
Despite a few shortcomings, though,
the Al-Mashriq server represents an excellent research tool for
information and analysis on contemporary Lebanon.

his Ph.D. at the University of Otago, New Zealand. His
dissertation examines the orientations of Lebanon's Maronite
community. (MERIA)
Research Guide Kuwait
Having been immersed for several
months in the world of Kuwait on the net, I've had to sort out the
good, the bad, and the ugly from among the many sites (and
sections of sites) on the Internet dedicated to Kuwait. So,
forgetting about the bad and the ugly as best I can, what follows
is a brief synopsis of the good.
If you're looking for current
economic news, Al-Shall provides an excellent Weekly Economic
report that is available at
This site is very reliable and is also fairly concise - a nice
weekly read.
For a more in-depth look at Kuwait,
the Library of Congress has a decent page on Kuwait:
If you read Arabic, it's worthwhile to check out the Kuwaiti
newspapers on the web: Al-Qabas at
and Al-Watan at
If you don't read Arabic, until the Arab Times gets on-line, the
only English language newspaper available is the Kuwait Times at
I should note that all of these sites, plus more, are accessible
through the Kuwait Information Office website at
The page is still under development, but it is being updated
continuously and by the time you read this - as the KIO transfers
more and more of its records to the net - the page is sure to
become a comprehensive and valuable site for all levels of
research.
As for governmental sites, in
addition to the State Department Background Notes and CIA world
Factbook, a lesser known U.S. government site is the State
Department's Country Commercial Guide, the most recent is at
Last but not least are the "mo" pages, or "Ministry of...." The
several Kuwaiti ministries that have set up pages have done so
with varying degrees of success. Each of these sites has some good
information, but each also has its fair share of layout problems
and outdated material.
Kuwaiti Ministries:
Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Ministry of Information
Ministry of Communications
Ministry of Finance
Ministry of Justice
Ministry of Education (Arabic)

Research Guide: Armenia
One of the world's most ancient
countries, the Republic of Armenia, can now be researched using
the most modern of methods. In the following websites you can find
interesting, useful and complete information on the policy,
economics, culture, religion of Armenia.
A superior site is that of the
Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in the United States
There you can find factual materials on Armenia, its cultural
heritage and attractions, and U.S.-Armenia bilateral relations. It
is also very good for its links with many websites in Armenia.
The Armenian News Network/Groong
is good for news about Armenia and its region. Many Armenian
newspapers are available through this site, including Asbarez,
Hayrenik, Armenian Weekly, The California Courier, and others.
News is included from Azeri and Turkish sources. There are also
press releases and event announcements from groups and a calendar
of events posted on Thursday mornings.
Other news sources worth reviewing
are Asbarez's own site
; the SNARK daily news page
; Armenia on-line
; Noyan Tapan Information & Analytical Center
and ArmenPress
The "AZG" newspaper covers daily
news, keeping Nagorno-Karabagh issues in the limelight. It is
widely considered the most useful newspaper and others often
reprint its stories.
Also useful is the Daily News site
Art, culture and history are
featured especially on
This site is notable for its original photographs and more than
700 paintings by Armenian artists. The gallery includes Hovhannes
Aivazovsky, Martiros Saryan, Minas Avetisian, Gevorg Bashinjagyan,
and others.
Regarding strategic and political
issues, the leading Armenian think tank, The Armenian Center for
National and International Studies, has a site with a number of
texts and information on these questions at
The Haik Institute, a Washington-based think tank with an office
in Yerevan, had a number of research studies, exchange programs,
and informational materials.
The Armenian Engineers & Scientists
of America, Inc. (AESA), has information on scientific, energy,
and environmental issues regarding Armenia. One of its projects is
sponsoring the publication of Armenian-language academic books.
The U.S. Armenia Business & Investment Association (USABIA)
focuses on bilateral business, trade, and investment relations.
The world's largest Armenian
website is Cilicia
It has over 375 pages filled with useful information, pictures and
links. The Internet-based on-line Journal Armenian Diasporan
Archives has material, updated periodically, on Armenian
communities throughout the world. But Volume 2 is being devoted
entirely to Armenia and Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabagh).
The leading academic organization,
the Society for Armenian Studies
includes studies on all aspects of Armenia past and present. Its
site includes the social, political, and economic questions; to
facilitate the group's newsletter.
Its German-language equivalent is
the Armenisch-Deutsche Korrespondenz published by the
German-Armenian Society, including information on both Armenia and
neighboring countries. For a subscription, write B.Duemler@online.de.
Finally, the government of Republic
of Armenia maintains its official websites for the president
and National Assembly

U.S. Foreign Affairs on CD-ROM
U.S. Department of State, U.S.
Foreign Affairs on CD-ROM: A Compilation of Documents, January
1993-March 1998, Vol. 6, No. 1., (Washington, DC: December 1998).
This disk is simply an awesome
resource, a virtual revolution in international affairs' research.
Don't be frightened by the new
technology. If your computer has the proper features, you can have
it working and learn to use this resource in ten minutes or so.
Earlier editions cover the years back into the 1980s.
The best starting point is the
Welcome file which provides a table of contents on which you can
click to travel around. You can search by item, date, or keyword.
The cd-rom uses the acrobat reader, standard on computers
currently being sold.
The U.S. State Department has put a
massive amount of documentation together in a very convenient
form. This little cd-rom includes:
- State Department reports on
terrorism for 1995 and 1996.
- Short background notes, facts
and statistics, on every country.
- Full texts of all daily State
Department briefings.
- All issues of Dispatch, the
State Department weekly magazine with officials' speeches,
treaties, and other documents.
- The full text of Foreign
Relations of the United States volumes for the Kennedy
Administration.
- Human rights reports on every
country.
- The diplomatic list of all
foreign envoys to the United States and
- State Department offices and
personnel abroad.
- Miscellaneous reports including
the U.S. mission to the UN, annual budgets, environmental issues,
the search for Nazi gold, the overview statement on U.S.
international strategy, and narcotics smuggling.
- Collections of speeches by State
Department officials.
- Special reports ranging from the
Law of the Sea to State Department organization.
- Reports on the economic and
trade policy of countries.
To have all the materials
represented here on paper would take several large bookcases and
cost well over $500. This is a superb resource for scholars and
researchers. (MERIA)

The Israel Ministry of Foreign
Affairs
The Israel Ministry of Foreign
Affairs officially launched ist third generation website -
- on February 1, 1999.
The Israel Foreign Ministry was the
first foreign ministry in the world which decided in 1993 to enter

ministry to do so.
Although not news oriented, it
deals with current affairs in depth, and the major world media
sites regularly direct their readers to the Israel Foreign
Ministry for detailed on-line information about Israel and the
Middle East.
The site, like its predecessors, is
designed specifically for audiences abroad and provides extensive
information about Israel in all areas. While the major language of
the site is English, some of the information is available also in
Arabic, Spanish, French, Portuguese and German. A separate site,
in Hebrew, designed for Israeli audiences, is under preparation.
The site contains official texts of
thousands of documents, including major agreements and is
maintained by the Information Division of the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs in Jerusalem. (BRISMES)
